Operation Strong Hearts and Minds will ensure that military-connected students in Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) are provided social-emotional skills learning through hands-on science activities. This addresses both the context-specific stressors and academic needs of military-connected students. This project is focused on elementary students across ten school sites. This grant will provide for the development and delivery of portable STEM stations that integrate social-emotional learning into science instruction. Military-connected students have endured the impact of a pandemic with accompanying drastic changes to how they are educated and with increased separation from family, social isolation, family economic hardships, and family loss or illness compiled with context-specific stressors as a military child. The grant’s goal is the establishment/re-establishment and/or strengthening of both social-emotional skills and advanced STEM skills of military-connected students. Hands-on, collaborative science experiences provide real-world opportunities for students to develop not only academic skills but also social-emotional competencies that promote life-long success.
