Abstract

This project will increase the math achievement of military-connected students in grades K-4 on qualitative and/or quantitative measures by the end of the grant term, at two schools (LEARN 6 and LEARN 10) in Great Lakes, IL and North Chicago, IL that serve families from Naval Station Great Lakes. To meet this goal, staff will implement a Multi-tiered System of Support, a proven framework for supporting learning. Funding from this grant would support the improvement of Tier 1 math instruction for all 480 K-4 students and the implementation of new Tier 2 services for about 100 students per year needing more intensive support. A Math Academic Interventionist will provide professional development to K-4 teachers to improve Tier 1 math instruction. Professional learning will specifically address students’ instructional needs while increasing best practices in mathematics instruction. The interventionist will also provide small group instruction to K-4 students in Tier 2 based on specific student gaps in grade-level math and foundational skills. Building a strong foundation in math is especially important in the early grades. Students need to master skills and concepts that will allow them to learn more advanced mathematics in the following years. But high mobility is a significant barrier to the math achievement of military-connected students. Switching schools with different curricula often leaves them with knowledge gaps. This project is designed to fill those gaps, accelerate learning, and build a strong, lasting foundation for math achievement.
