This project is designed to improve the math achievement of military-connected students in grades K-7 at LEARN DC, a charter school founded in 2021 to serve families at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C. Success in improving math achievement by the end of the grant term will be evidenced by quantitative and/or qualitative measures. Funding from this MCASP grant would support professional development and intervention services to improve the math achievement of up to 400 K-7 students per year. To meet the goal, LEARN DC will hire a math coach/interventionist to provide professional development to K-7 teachers to improve math instruction for all students and interventions for students needing more support. The coach/interventionist will also provide small group math instruction to about 25 students annually needing the most intensive intervention to fill learning gaps and meet grade-level math standards. Individual student progress will be continually monitored schoolwide using a computerized “data dashboard.” High mobility is a significant barrier to the math achievement of military-connected students. At LEARN DC, military-connected students are currently achieving annual growth goals in mathematics at a lower rate than their non-military peers, as evidenced by nationally normed standardized assessments. This project is designed to improve the quality of math instruction, fill learning gaps, and accelerate math achievement.
